Studio Rental
Red Barn Pottery is home to a 2000 square foot studio that is dedicated to the personal development of ceramic arts by its members, associates, students, and the local pottery community generally. (See Classes). The guiding inspiration that led the original founder, Ruth Zimmerman, to develop her historic barn into a pottery studio was to create an artistic community where individuals could interact with one another socially and artistically, thereby maximizing each member's potential. The current owner, Jane Hildebrand, has embraced the original intent, and is further dedicated to promoting community, creativity, and individual expression in a collaborative space. The individual studios' walls, only 30 inches high, denote the edges of an artist's individual studio, but they do not isolate them from their fellow members.
Studio Membership:
The Red Barn studio contains five 10' by 10' private studios which rent at a current rate of $250 per month. This fee includes all studio costs except for clay and firing (see below for details). Each studio has a large window looking out at the beautiful wooded area surrounding the barn. Individuals who rent studios will have a key to the studio and flexible hours of access. *Please note: Private studios are currently unavailable.
Shelf Membership:
Those who wish to have access to a pottery studio, but who do not need to rent an entire private studio space, may become a shelf renter. Shelf renters pay $100 per month. They are provided with a large (2’ x 4’) shelf area to store their tools and pottery in progress. General studio space is available for storage during all stages of the process. Shelf renters will have a key to the studio and flexible hours of access.
Clay:
All members may purchase clay from Red Barn Pottery at cost. If you have clay from another source, the clay info will need to be shared with and cleared by Jane in order to ensure the safety of all firings.
Firing:
All members are responsible for their firings. Individual members may use an entire kiln for their own work, or they may share the firing with other members. Firing our electric kilns is quite straightforward, given that they are automatic. They can be fired independently or with other members. A small test kiln is also available for firing test tiles or small projects. It is not automatic and requires more hands-on operation, but is not difficult to operate. Electric kilns must be vacuumed after each use.
Thus far, the gas kiln firings have been group projects including many Red Barn members.
A member can fill an electric kiln with their own ware and be responsible for all the work and cost associated with that or they can share a firing with others and split the work and cost accordingly. We use email to notify each other of firings and possible sharing of kilns, as we commonly combine firings among members.
